Weather not good

Stan: June 7, 2005 (10:31am) Tuesday

Here at the St. Mary KOA, now known as “Park Waterlogged”, we endure the second day of rain. While we’re keeping our powder dry, we discuss the relative merits of splashing through mud holes, like when we were kids, or avoiding them all together. Sheila, very ladylike, walks around them. The only thing keeping this RV park from becoming one continuous puddle, is the fact that it’s built on the side of a hill.

The wind has been blowing hard most of last night and today. It’s blowing in the right direction to move the storm farther east, but this stubborn SOB hasn’t moved an inch in two days. The TV weather persons are calling this rain storm “spotty rain showers.” I can attest to that, its been raining on this very spot for  two days now.

For the time being, the rain has stopped. It’s still overcast but we can see the peak west of the RV park, which now has new snow about half way down. Yesterday, the snow was mostly near the top. The outside temp is about 50 degrees, which isn’t all that bad, until the wind blows.

This afternoon, when it was raining pretty hard, we thought we might not go on to Wateron Park and move on to Canmore Canada, where Johnna has reservations for Friday. However, if this weather holds, we might stay over another day and drive the Going-to-the-Sun road. If we don’t, we’ll come back some day, but later in the year.

14 Miles Up Going-to-the-Sun Road

Still in St. Mary. The skies cleared up a bit over night so we extended our stay another day. About 8 AM we decide to try the Going-to-the-Sun Road trip again. The main gate was open but no one was on duty. We went ahead and got about 14 miles before the road was closed. On the way back to the RV park, we stopped at the Visitors Center, where I learned that eight inches of snow had fallen in the upper passes. The ranger in the Visitors Center said the work crews were half way through the pass and opined that the road might be opened around 2 PM.
